WELLINGTON, August 4. Mrs Claude, widow of tho late F. A. Claude, of Otahuhu, who was instrumental in preventing an accident to the Main Trunk express on which Lord Islington was travelling on April 17 last, and who died three weeks later, is petitioning the- Bouse for a compassionate allowance for herself 3nd her two children, who have been left unprovided for. Mr W, S. Furby, who recently retired from the Genera! Poet Office staff, has been granted a pension of £395 6s Bd, as from June 1 last.
The member for Invercargil] (Mr Hanan) has given notice to ask whether tho Government, with, a view to having parliamentary business conducted on more expeditions, efficient, and ]e?s costly lines, will have the Standing Orders amended so as to dispense -with such ueelew excrescences as lengthy debates on the Addrese-in-Reply, etc.
A compjseionat© allowance of £IOO was paid to the widow of the Hon. G. F. Richardson, at "one time member for Mataura. This item appears in the unauthorised expenditure.
