It was resolved that in view of tho match with Southland trial matches be played on August 16 and 23, tho Selection Committee to consist of Messrs Gear, D. Baillie, and Goughian. WINTON J.C. The annual meeting of the Winton Jockey Chub was held on Wednesday evening. Tho report stated : —“Although we hear a good deal about tho deleterious results of horse-racing from the reports of the anti-gam biers, it will be seen from the balance-shoet t hat in the view of the general public the sport is gaining more in favor year bv year, which is, moreover, clearly evinced by the increased attendances at all local race meetings. Tho present season commenced with a total cash credit of £1,428 7s lOd, and closed with a credit of £1,703 13s 2d, an increase of £275 5s 4d. When it is considered that the stake money was increased by £IOO, and that the Government Stamp Duty cost the club £l4l above last year’s tax, it will be seen that this is the most prosperous year that the club has yet had. Another extremely pleasing feature is the continued increase of members. Last year there were 147 financial members, whereas this year the total is 186. This increase shows conclusively that the administration of the club’s affairs by the committee meets with the approval of the local sporting public. The totalisator investments for the annual races have made another record for the club, the amount being £10.688, as against last year’s record of £9,761. The club have decided to reinstate the race known as the Winton Guineas, for three-year-old horses, for which the sum of 60 guineas has been allotted. This race is for the purpose of encouraging the breeding of thoroughbreds in the districts south of Dunedin. The stake-money was increased from £1,200 to £1,300, which sum is a de~ cided credit to any club in tho Dominion.” CHESS. The chess match by telegraph between the Otago and Oamaru Chess Clubs will be resumed this evening. As all the boards have reached the mid-game stage, some interesting end-game play should evontuaate. The jockey Joseph Trenoweth has served a writ on the chairman and committee of tho West Australian T.C., claiming damages for wrongful disqualification and an injunction to prevent the committee from further proceeding with the disqualification. Trenoweth was disqualified by the stewards for two years on the ground of foul riding at Kalgoorlie, and the Appeal Board recently refused him permission to appeal against this decision.
