* ■ The Mayor (Mr F. W. Platte) and Crs Fail, Powell, Woolsey, Asher, Mawson, Anderlon, and Lunn attended the ordinary meeting last night. —Correspondence.— From Mr Blair Mason, giving notice of Port Chalmers Borough's release from liability to be called on by tho Harbor Board to make up interest charges on tho new dock loan.—Received. # From' Mr C. Piper, railway traffic manager, acknowledging receipt of the council's acquiescence in proposed train alterations, and also stating that from the Ist proximo the 6.15 train from Port Chalmers will stop at Mussel Bay. —Received. From the Firo Brigade, enclosing Captain J. Osborn's resignation and stating that Mr W. Dougherty had been elected in his stead.—Captain Osborn had been in tho brigade, for 21 years, and only indifferent health forced his resignation.—Letter referred to Works Committee to report on the appointment of fire inspectors. From Herbert Asher, stating that as the borough had relieved of the dock guarantee, the footpath in Meridian struct should be extended, as the roadway was impassable in bad weather. —Referred to Works Committee. The Mayor reported that the Corporation had recovered from Luttrell and Scott the £3O owing for a quarter's rent for uso of the municipal quarry. —Reports.— The Finance Committee reported that for the past fortnight the income amounted to £lB2 lis Id, and the expenditure to £196 Is 2d; coupon payments on loans totalled £66 16s.— Adopted.

Tho Works Committee reported that since the previous meeting the staff had be-on principally engaged spreading and breaking rotten rock at Wiekliffe terrace and trimming bank in Constitution street, which work was expected to be finished by the end of this week. I Tho streets and channels had received ! the usual attention. They recommended | that an asphalt path be made in Belle I Vue place 3£ chains long by 3ft 6iu wide, to include asphalt from corner of Fox street to foot of steps opposite section 293 and side track to part section 298. They also recommended that tenders be invited for quarrying and delivery of 300 cubic yards of rotten rock from Victory place quarry to Burns street. The.v further recommended that the Fire Brigade station be removed from Burns street to opposite section 325, Fox street, at a probable cost of £B. The committee were calling for fresh tenders for the walling in Grey street.—Adopted. The Water Committee reported on several minor matters relative to water services, and recommended a uniform charge of Is 6d per ton for water supplied to tho shipping.—Cr Fail said Is 9d to 2s had been hitherto charged for water, and the committee thought that instead of that graduated scale the Dunedin rate bo adopted as they recommended.—Cr Asher said that reductions were made for water, so that the charges wore not really so high as they, seemed, except for very small quantities.—Report adopted, the Is Gd per ton lor water to bo the net price. The Reserves Committee recommended acceptance of Mr J. Mills's offer of £4 10s per annum tor lease of section 139 in Aurora terrace, and of Mrs E. Coleman's offer of £1 5s per year, besides rates, for use of section 373 Victory place.—Adopted. —General.— One tender was received for the channelling of the first section of George street. It was suggested that this tender be not opened, and that the time for receiving tenders be extended for a fortnight. It was also suggested that tho tender bo opened, and if it was not suitable, that the work be Srocoeded with by day labor.—The tenor was opened on the casting vote of the mayor, and it proved to bo from Mr C. Stevenson, who offered to do the work for the sum of £l6l 6s Bd.—Tho tender was referred to the Works Committee with power to act.
