The val-die'ory social in connection with the presen'etion of prizes of the Punedin Highland Rifles was what might be called the "last muster" of the old volunteer comnany. Formed as far back as 1885, the Highlanders have passed a large number c.f men throneh their ranks, and to-day many of our leading citizens feel proud of the fact that they were at one time enrolled on the strcneth of this company. At the time of the war in Strath Africa 15 members volunteered for service at the front. One of th"ir number (Trooper Gillies) lost his life through fever, while another (Troopei* Benth) lost his riant arm, caused bv a wound wived in action. That the Highland Rifles have always been considered an efficient corps is borne out by the fact of so many promotions having been made in the past to the battalion of which they formed a patt. The idea of forming an ex-members' association is a good one, and nidging bv the enthusiastic spirit in which the suggestion as made, bv Car-tain Dempster was received the club should soon become a real live institution. The score of 759 made by the winning team has been beaten many times in previous competitions for the Kolapore Cup. Fiobablv the weather wnTtions were bad, and if so this, in coninnction v.-ith the fact that the service target was used throughout the match, mnkes the average (neat'v 95> a fairly pood performance, ft was hard luck that a colonial team should lose the coveted trophy after tieing with the winners, but Koine consolation for th°m is the fact tint they win the £BO given to the to.'im with the best aggregate score outside the Mother Cotmtiy. The hattnlion order issued for Julv by Major J. M'Ati.. commanding 4th R New- Zealand Rifles, contains tho following paragraphs : Inspection of Arms.—The. annual inspection of arms will bo carried out bv the district armorer a* under (all rifles and sword bayonets not produced will bo charged for: officers commanding companies will arrange that keys of orderly rooms or drill halls are available on tho day of inspection):—A company, Thursday," 10th August; (' company, Monday", 14th August: 1'" company, Thursday. 24th August; V company, Monday," 7th August; G company, Wednesdav", 2nd August ; H company, Thursday, 27th July.
