Mr James Allen, M.P., intends to visit the South Sea Islands at the end of next month. Mr Massey is on his way to the South for the purpose of resuming his electoral campaign. On Friday night he will speak at Oamaru, and at Riverton and Invercargill the following week. Mr James Ashcroft, formerly Official Assignee at Dunedin and Wellington, died this morning after a week’s illness; aged seventy-seven years (says a Wellington P.A. wire). He came out from the Old Country in 1862, and was engaged in business at Christchurch, Oamaru, and Dunedin before receiving the appointment as Official Assignee at the last-named place. In 1885 lie was a member of the Otago Provincial Council, along with Sir W. J. Steward, for two sessions, and was editor of the • Otago Daily Times ’ for live years. He. was for many years an active member of the Anglican body, both in Oamaru and Dunedin, and took a leading part in the Diocesan Synod in resisting the appointment of Bishop Jenner as first Anglican Bishop of Dunedin. He retired from the Public Sendee on pension in February, 1908. Mr Chamberlain is on Ills way home much improved in health. The Pope received the Mayor of Perth, who is now in Europe. A cable advises tho death of Dr Edward (trace, a onco well-known cricketer, and elder brother of Dr W. G. Grace, tho greatest cricketer of his generation. Tho King and Queen attended tho firstnight performance of the musical comedy ‘ Count Luxembourg ’ at Daly’s. There was a queue outside tho house from dawn till the doors opened. Fifteen hundred waiters were turned away. The London newspapers favorably notice tho playing of Miss Alma Moodie, tho Queensland child violinist. Madame Josephine Ottlee, who will sing tho soprano music in the ‘ Elijah ’ oratorio to-morrow night, arrived in Dunedin by tho first express to-day.
