CRIME IN AUCKLAND.

PENALTIES OF POPULATION. [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, May 22. Tho criminal sessions began to-day. There were twenty-five bills presented, and Mr Justice Chapman, in Ills charge to tho Grand July, referred to the large number of cases. He said that no doubt the larger proportion of criminal cases in Auckland compared with other centres was due to the greater population. He commented favorably on tho absence of offences against women. Frank Stokes alias Tozer, for forgery and uttering, received twelve months’ imprisonment and three years reformatory Auckland compared with otscr centres was forgery and uttering, was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and declared a habitual criminal.
