LECTURE AT PORT CHALMERS

In the Port Chalmers Presbyterian Church last night the Rev. A. Whyte, Mi., 8.D., gave a lecture entitled ‘The Songs of Son.’ Tracing the history of hymned praise from the period of the Songs of Moses and the Psalms of David, the lecturer spoke of the sacred songs preserved to the present day from the Greek and Latin Churches, the Lutheran Reformation in Germany, and the great reformation and evangelical periods in England and Scotland. John of Damascus, of the Greek Church, Ambrose and Augustine of the T-aiin Church, Martin Luther of the German Reformation, John Milton, Bishop Kane, Addison, Isaac Watts, John Newton, Cowper, the Wesleys, the Bonara, and hosts of others renowned in church history as singers and preachers were passed in review, and selections from their compositions were rendered with good effect by the church choir, under the leadership of Mir J.
