FIRES.
“Our Own” wires from Balcluthu : The Volunteer Hall at Owaka was burned down late on Saturday night. The billiard table was saved, but the uniforms ox the volunteers are believed to have been destroyed. The building was insured for £250 in the State Office. The fire is said to have been caused by a spark from a railway engine. On Sunday morning two shops at North Clyde (Hawke’s Bay), occupied fay Mr T. Bax, who kept a tobacconist’s, draper’s, and grocer’s shop, and a billiard room, and Mr Allen, saddler, were burned, nothing_ being saved. The insurance on the building was £4OO. Mr Bax’s stock, billiard table, and fittings were insured for £3OO in the South British Office, and Mr Allen’s stock was covered bv a policy of £250 in the Atlas Office.
