W.C.T.U.

The Annual meeting of the above having been altered from November to February, tltero was only a month’s work to detail at tho meeting this week. The past year had been one of .steady and aggreirdvc work. The main legislative work of the year had been the sending out of gambling petitions, to which 3.462 aigiiattires were attaelted. A resolution of tliauke was voted to the Council ofChuiches for invaluable assistance, and to Air 11. H. Driver pi particular Twelve new members were enrolled during the yt-.il', but two had passed over to tho majority (Mrs Dick ;uul Mias Hancock). Several attempts were made to get. a box for temperance literature placed at the City railway station, but up tp the present these have proved unsuccessful, a high rate being fixed for the privilege, and for much tho same reason (the high prohibitive railway rale) it had not been found jioarible to send j a reels of temperance literature, though such bad boen made up, to the " baekblocks.'’ In connection with tho Sailors’ Rest, tho following interesting report was forwarded by Air Falconer: —The work at tho Rest has gone on this past year much as in former times. Certainly we should have rejoiced more abundantly if wc bad manifestly seen 11)01x3 fruit—vi/., tho conversion of wmls. Still, wc liave bad came to bless God for many cases of professed turning to Him. and doubtless some veal work has been done by the Spirit of God unseen by us, yet evident in the lines of those who have for a short period visited us, but now arc scattered over the world. The daily frequenters of the Rest are numerous. Scores daily toms in and out, finding this resort a comfort, as a restlhg place for a quiet read, while hundreds have taken advantage of the writing desks. Of course it is lit the evenings when the rr.cn at our wharves specially attend, itnd, considering all things, we get. a fair share of seamen who visit our port. Wo continue to get most encouraging letters from seamen of all ranks w-ho have been, with ns. Our friend Frank T. Bullen generously gave a lecture—his own life's experiences—when in Dunedin, and tho proceeds (nearly £100) were freely handed over to tiustees, to be distributed' by me to help teamen in distress. Lately Mrs James Alollison handed me a cheque, fur £lO for books fur the Re-rt. Our weekly Friday and Sunday evening meetings have kept up well, and we have had a number of sailors’ leas, ntoi© especially for foreign crews. Wc have scattered thousands of good reading matter, including, best of all, Testaments and Bibles, and thousands of Gospel books and tracts. We have to thank many friends for gifts of reading matter, coal, etc., also the proprietor of ‘ livening Star.’ ‘ Otago Daily Times,’ ‘Outlook,’ etc., for their issues. We are grateful, indeed, for the hearty co-operation of many Christian triendj ami workers, for all their self-deny-ing. voluntary aid. We thank God for all His kindness, and trust fur even brighter days for this work at the Dunedin Sailors’ Rest.
