At the Homebush sales (Sydney) sheep values were lower. Best wethers sold at 19s. Cattle were firm. Best bullocks, £lO ss; good, £9 10s; best cows, £7 15s; good, £6 15s. Best beef, 25s per 1001b. Tile quantity of coal exported from Westport during September was 42.564 tons. THE AGENT-GENERAL’S CABLE. . WELLINGTON, October 4.—The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from tire Agent-General, dated London, October - 1; —There has been better tone In the mutton market this week. The average price for Canterbury mutton is 4|d for light weight and 4d for heavy weight. For Dunedin, Southland, and W.M.E. Company mutton, 4jd nominal; other North Island mutton, 4d. There is no alteration in the lamb market since last week. The beef market is depressed, owing to the large supplies coming forward. The average prices to-day are :—Hindquarters N.Z. beef, 3jd; forequarters, 2i,d. The butter market is steady. Average price choicest N.Z. butter (stored), 9Ss per cwt. Nowmake Australian is to-day quoted at 112s, and Danish at 120s. There is no alteration in the cheese market since last week. The hemp market is firm, and good business has been done for October to December* shipments. The price of N.Z. hemp is good, lair Wellington grade on the spot fetching to-day £3O per ton, and Manila hemp (fail - current grade, on the spot) £37. There is no alteration in the cocksfoot seed market since last week. The hop market is firm, and prices continue to advance. Supplies will be short.
