The Poherua was due at Timaru at noon to-day, but it was then uncertain whether she would require to call at Oamaru en route for Port Chalmers. Her arrival at Port Chalmers may, however, be looked for to-morrow. The Pukaki, having taken in a supply of bunker coal, was swung this forenoon lor the adjustment of her compasses, and sails This evening with the hulk Elinor Verdon in tow for Wellington. - The Invercargill took on board transhipments ex Surrey at the Bowen pier vestnrday. evening,’and came up to Dunedin this morning to put out timber for the vriiarf extension and to load for Invercargill. She sans this evening. Messrs Keith Ramsay advise that the Rimu, which arrived at the Blnff yesterday, is loading dredging plant at that port for Greymonth. The Rose Casey, from Invercargill and Stewart Island, arrived this morning, and worked cargo to-day at the Rattray street wharf. The harbor-master at Westport reports 'to the Harbor Board that the latest soundings on the bar were very good. He suggests that the river in the vicinity of the flagstaff should be dredged for SOOffc, as the water is very scant at neap bides, and a steamer could go out with a foil load if she meets neap tides. The Swedish barque Diana, 681 tons, is. to bring a cargo df hardwood from Banbury, West Australia, to Wellington and Dunedin. Mr 11. A. M‘Gregor, until recently Inspector of Machinery at Wellington, and who is now touring Scotland, was on beard the Union Company’s new turbine steamer Loongana when she underwent her official trial trip on Loch Tyne. Writing to hia son in Wellington, Mr M‘Gregor • gives an interesting account of the vessel and the trial trip, at which there were about 300 guests. Mr M (Gregor states that he tried the vessel right aft when • she was doing eighteen or nineteen knots, and could only feel the slightest vibration, and _4oft from her stem he * could have imagined he was on a rock. On no other part of the boat but right aft could lie feel any vibration or hear any sound of engines. Mr M‘Gregor also went ' below, and found that at top speed the firemen never were called upon to exert themselves, and had scarcely anything on their fires. * The Marine Department has been in- . formed, that on the night of September 28 the 'master of the Ngtmgnrn passed an upturned boat, painted black, about thirty feet keel, nine miles west by south of Sinclair Head. ’ The Monowai, from Melbourne, arrived alongside the tongue wharf early this morning. . Union Steam Ship Company advise that the Rotomahana will be withdrawn from the Wellington-Lyttelton service for a few days this week.' On her arrival at Lyttelton on Thursday she will go into clock there,, and will resume running on Saturday. ■ . ■ 0 The Monowai, leaving here for Sydney to-morrow, will await the arrival of the express at Lyttelton on Thursday, in order to make the usual Thursday evening trip between Lyttelton and Wellington. There will be no steamer from Lyttelton to Wellington on Friday, and only one steamer—the Mararoa—will make the trip from Wellington to Lyttelton on that day. THE F.H.S. STEAMERS. Messrs Turnbull, Martin, local agents for the Federal-Houlder-Shire steamers, advise as follows : The Banffshire, from Sydney, is dne at Port Chalmers for African and West of England loading on Monday morning, and then proceeds to Timarn,* Lyttelton, and Wellington, in that order, taking her final departure from Wellington about the 20th inst. She is the October contract steamer. The Mimiro, with inward West of England cargo, is doe at Port Chalmers about the middle of the present month. The Rippingham Grange left New York for New Zealand ports direct on September 24. She is due at Auckland about November 22, and may be expected here during the first week in December. She is to discharge at Dunedin wharf. THE DIRECT STEAMERS. The Paparoa left the Cape on Saturday for Wellington. SHIPPING TELEGRAMS. AUCKLAND, October 3.—5.45 p.m., Moana, for Sydney.
