Mr George Todd, who died at his residence, in London street, yesterday, was father of Captain Todd (Union Steam Ship Company), Mr George Todd (of the Assets Realisation Board), Mr Stanley Todd (now in Wellington), and Mrs O'Meagher. The deceased gentleman belonged originally to Edinburgh, and came to Otago from Canterbury about thirty years ago. He was, we believe, a civil engineer by profession, but he never practised here, and as a matter of fact was principally known to golfers, since much of his leisure was spent in watching or playing the game. He was quite one of the old school of golfers, and knew old Tom Morris, the St. Andrews celebrity, personally. Mr Todd's last public appearance was as one of the players in the foursome match with which * Lord Glascow opened the Otago Golf Club's new links. Even as an old man he had some very pretty strokes. His son Stanley was for one year champion of the colony. The death is announced at Timaru of Mr James Bruce, one of the early settlers of South Canterbury and Waimate district.

Mr D. M. Findkiy, who has been delivering a course of lectures on mercantile law and other subjects to a number who are studying for the examination of the Incorporated Institute of Accountants of New Zealand, was presented by those gentlemen with a dessert service and cigar case as a mark of their appreciation of the lectures. The presentation was made by Mr George M. MacLcan, and Messrs G. Duncan, Blyth, and others also spoke in appreciative terms of the work done by Mr Findlay, and expressed a hope that the course would be continued next year on an extended basis. Mr Findlay, in responding, expressed his willingness to comply with the latter request.. Mr J. Edwards has been elected vicepresident of the New Zealand Chess Association for 1903-G4.
