EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS

The quarterly returns of attendance for the period ended 30th September, 1903, which have been compiled by the secretary of the Education Board, show that there ■were 121 schools in operation in this district, employing 135 males and 327 female teachers. The number of pupils on the roll at the beginning of the quarter was 19,536, and at the end of the quarter 19,649, comprising 10,148 boys and 9,501 girls. The average attendance was 8,944 boys and 8,199 girls, making a total of 17,143*, being 43 more than the total for the previous quarter and 635 less than that for the September quarter of 1902.
