NORTH-EAST VALLEY BOROUGH.

TO THE EDIIOB. Sir, —I think it hardly fair that your columns should be used for the purpose of endeavoring to bring discredit on a public servant by such senseless and sneering innuendoes as tho-e expressed by your correspondent "Pile Up" under the above heading in last night's issue of your paper The innuendo referred to is probably unintelligible to most of your readers, though sufficiently obvious to the initiated. The town clerk has doubtless trodden on some people's corns in the execution of his duty, and as a rule a man who has no enemies is not much good in a public position; but it is generally admitted by those who are in a position to judge that the gentleman in question is a capable servant to the borough, and one who does his work without fear or favor. I have certainly no reason to Jake up the cudirels on his behlf, but as you are aware n public servant is usually debarred from defending himself in a newspaper correspondence, and I think it is hard that he should have his name dragged before the public by anonymous and sarcastic scribblers of the type of your last night's correspondent.—l am, etc., Ratepayer Behind the Scenes. North-east Valley, May 22.
