THE HOKITIKA RIVER.
HOKITIKA, July 10. There is considerable concern in ’this locality in regard to the proclamation of the Hokitika Hirer as a sludge channel. The County Council yesterday made a representation to the Minister of Mines asking that a similar course to that adopted in Grey bo taken in regard to Hokitikar—namely, to send down departmental officers to adjust the claims of the settlers. A public meeting of miners will be held at Rimu tonight. The heads of the various local bodies are invited to attend. The delay in dealing with the matter is operating prejudicially against the investment of capital to bring a permanent water supply on to the Rimu goldfield, hence the spirited agitation. It is recognised that with an adequate water supply there will be a great boom in alluvial mining over the district affected, which at present is languishing for the one thing necessary to give vitality to the field.
