CITY COUNCIL REPORTS.

The following is a summary of the reports to be presorted at tomorrow's meeting of the City Council: — The Works Committee recommend that (1) the Council authorise the construction of several gullies and pipe drains for the purpose of intercepting the storm water and diverting it into proper channels, and the better formation of the gutters in the West Taieri road above Robin Hood Quarry, and also at Serpentine avenue, at the intersection of and below the Queen’s Drive, at a cost of about £75, provided the Roslyn Borough Council pay portion of the of the work in the road leading to that borough; (2) the guard fence on the northern side of Clarke street be renewed; (3) the zig-zag footpath and steps in Canongate street between Clarke and Bussell streets be renewed tind topdressed. The city engineer has been instructed to have the necessary repairs to St. Abb’s zig-zag footpath carried out ; to repair several large holes and ruts along Serpentine avenue and Canongate street with bluestone metal; to make tie spring water in the district between Steep street and MonteciUo again available; and to carry out the necesaarv filling-up and formation of the footpath opposite Messrs A. Moritzson and Co. s premises in Cumberland street, provided they effect necessary repairs to tluA drain pipes. Aiter an inspection of the district between Steep street and MonteciUo regarding an alleged nuisance, evidence of drainage from property on Eglinton road was observed, but the Committee do not consider it of such a nature as to cause a~ nuisance. The Reserves Committee report having instructed the city engineer to act in the following matters: —(1) Application from Mr M. Glaister for permission for an Association football club to play on the Town Belt opposite Mr James Rattray s residence miring the forthcoming season; (2) with the chairman, at a cost not to exceed £5, with regard to Mr T. Brown’s suggestion that a few seats be provided on the Town Belt at MonteciUo; (3) as to repairs required to fence on Town Beit at the top of York place; (4) regarding notice board broken at junction of Town Belt and Belleknowes roads, and one removed from Corporation section in Upper Kaikorai district; (5) as to instructing head gardener to lay poison in the Botanical Gardens for the destruction of rixwts and weasels; (6) in having clay (about sis loads) placed round the roots of certain of the trees in the Botanical Gardens; (7) as to repairs to cap of fountain in the Triangle. The Cqmmittee approve of the chairman’s proposal to plant with suitable trees the outlying properties of the LounCll The Water Committee report having granted the foUowing applicationsMr Frank Henderson, for permission to dig on. a terrace situated below Powder Creek, on the Siiverpeaks side of the stream, on the terms contained in his letter, the permission to be during the pleasure of the CouncU; Mr James Hazlett for a refund of £4 overpaid for a water supply. The city engineer has been instructed to a etas to Mr G- M. Bair’s complaint of ;e----moval of survey pegs from Corporation land near Ross Creek Reservoir. The General Committee report having repUed to the letter from the Otago and Southland Fire Underwriters’ Association, in which attention is -drawn to the dangerous practice of setting off fireworks in the City, that public attention wiU be directed to section 208 of by-law No. 1. The purchase of another horse for the Dunedin City Fire Brigade, at a cost of £45 10s, has been approved. The Committees previous decision, declining Mr James Walquest’s application for a hawker’s license, has been adhered to. The Gas Committee recommend that (1) the offer from the New Zealand Coal and Oil Company, Limited, to supply 15,000 gallons of gas oil at 6d per gallon delivered at the city gasworks, South Dunedin, be accepted, the company to undertake to supply good sound storage tanks for same, and to deUver the oil in suitable quantities for handling; four months’ credit to be aUowed the Council. (2) Mr Andrew Sneddon’s tender' for the supply of about 10,000 tons (more or less) of Newcastle coal from the East Greta coUiery to the city gasworks for the year commencing Ist April, 1902, be accepted at the following prices:—Screened £1 6s 9d, unscreened £1 5s 9d, and small coal £1 Is 6d per ton —that tender being the lowest. The engineer reported most strongly in favor of East Greta coal, (3) A trial be given to the Westport Coal Company, Limited, of. say, 2,000 tons of unscreened or slack coal during the year, as provided in clause 5 of the specification. The Finance Committee recommend that Mr John M’Farlane be offered without prejudice the sum of £25 towards the expense incurred by him in making good the damage done by the slip that took place in Clark© street in October last.

The Tramway Committee recommend that Mrs Low be panted £l2 per annum for the extra work now required to be done in the Town Hall Buildings. With reference to motion No. 1,392, re carrying out of electric installation of tramways in Dunedin, the Committee have no recommendation to make on the matter. An assistant at £4 per week has been granted to the. city engineer for sir weeks to bring to an early completion the work of surveying at Lee Stream. The Works Committee have a supplementary report, as follows: —Referring to the report of 14th October, 1901, from the city engineer re improvements required in the City, your Committee cannot see their way to recommend the Council ■ to borrow £60,000 for city works as detailed :—(1) Concrete water-tables, £12,000; (2) tarred metalling, £37,700: (3) drainage works, £5,000 ; (4) road and foot bridges, £2,500; (5) stables, sheds, horses, and plant, £2,000 ; (6) steam road roller, £BOO. The Committee recommend as follows ; —(1) Provision will be made in the estimates to be submitted in March for £3,000 for concrete channelling; (2) to beleft over untilfcontract for tarred metalling of tramway line is entered into, but that plans and specifications be prepared, to be in readiness for calling for tenders, so that the work may be carried out at the same time as tramway contract —this refers to Princes street and George street from Manor place to Knox Church, Castle street and part of High street from Princes street to new railway station; 13) no recommendation in the meantime; (4) are being attended to. and a further report will be supplied; (5) no recommendation to make at present; (6) ordered as per resolution of the Council.
