MY BOY TAMMIE.
TO TUB EDITOIt. Sib,— ln the ‘lllustrated LondomNews’ of November 4 there is Kipling’s poem ‘ The Absent-minded Beggar,’ with illustrations. .Turning over a few pages there is a photo of some members of the No. 2 Scottish Company, one of whom has evidently been chosen to represent Tommy Atkins. Now, was it because they could only find that happy-go-lucky kind of expression in a Scotsman’s face to do the Absent-minded Beggar justice, or was it fate that always seems to fetch bim on top ? Well, after all, it is only right that he should represent the British soldier, for don’t they always stick him in front when any fighting is to be done ? only he should have had the bagpipes over his shoulder, for without this bundle of sticks no charge would be of any avail. I wonder they did not choose the Absentminded Beggar who forgot his legs, were shot off when he played the ‘ Cook o’ the North ’ at Dargai Heights to represent Tommy. I am, etc., Britisuer. January 6.
