GLASGOW TRAMWAYS AND TAXATION.
SO THE EDITOB. Sik, —In answer to an inquiry on the above subject, I have the following reply from a friend in Glasgow.—l am, etc., Sknex. January 6. I have heard before of the absurd idea which has taken root abroad that the success of our tramways is so great as to do away with city rates altogether. The Corporation tramways are certainly very successful, but still a long way from making us such an Elysium. The halfpenny fare for half a mile is what has done it, Id carrying for one mile and a-half, IJd for two miles, and so on. This is an average of 33J per cent, reduction, compared with the old company, and alarge bonus in its favor. There is a profit besides, which, after writing off reasonable depreciation, goes towards the common good. 1 enclose receipts for city taxes paid last year. I cannot give the tenant’s receipts and the landlord s for any one property, because the former arc, of course, the tenants’ vouchers, and in their own hands. As a tenant, however, 1 send my own receipts for police, etc., on an annual valuation of ioS, and also landlord’s receipts for taxes on an annual valuation of £233. From these the following tabulation is extracted : Tenant's Taxes (Valuation £SB). To police, sanitary, statute labor, public health, sewage, roads and bridges, parks, etc., municipal buildings, etc., registration of births, etc., registration of voters, valuation of lands, prison payment, Clyde embankments, general purposes assessment. diseases of animals, city improvements, lunacy purposes and juvenile delinquency prevention, and repression assessments.
