Mt Stead had a long interview with the Czar, and received His Majesty’s thanks for his support of the Peace Conference. Major Marchand’s expedition has reached Jibutil, in Abyssinia. A fire destroyed 40,000 volumes in the library of the Paris Chamber of Commerce. Great preparations are being made in New York for Admiral Dewey’s reception. He will act as adviser to President M’Kinley on naval and colonial matters* Twelve bodies have been recovered from the wreck of the Loch Sloy, including those of Captain Nichol and Mr and Mrs Leicester, two of the passengers. A train of artillery to man the guns and searchlight has been sent to Johannesburg. Dr Jameson, who was leader of the raid on the Transvaal, has sailed for Cape Town. Signor Pelloux has re-formed the Italian Ministry. He takes the portfolios of Premier and Minister for the Interior; Marquis Visconti Venosta takes charge of Foreign Affairs; General Mirri is Minister of War, and Admiral Brettolo of Marine. The now Cabinet are considered extremely Conservative.
