OTAGO CHESS CLUB

A committee meeting of the Otago Ohesa Club was held last n’ght, Mr J. Edwards (president) in the chair. A letter was read from the secretary of the Wellington Che: a Ciub regretting their inability to accept the challenge of the Otago Chess Club for t' e 24:,h May, owing to that date having been pledged to Auckland. The letter further added that the Wellington Club would bo pleased to meet the 0 ago Chess Club in a telegraph match, suggesting fifteen or twen y players a side. Mr Lyders proposed, Mr L. Warsaw seconded, and it was resolved, that the secretary be instructed to write to the Wel ington Club offering to meet them in a telegraph match, with a maximum of twelve a side, and suggesting that the match should extend over three nighla Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, or any three successive evenings most suitable, play to begin at seven o’clock. Some discussion ensued as to the number of boards the club should play in these telegraph matches, most of those present being in favor of ten as the maximum.—lt was proposed by Mr Hamel and seconded by f j R. A. Cleland—“ That this club sugg so that the Council of the New Zealand Chess Association should take into consideration the subject of telegraphic chess matches between the various clubs affiliated with the New Zetland Chess Council, with a view to arranging a schedule of matches and conditions generally, as to the number o! boards, etc ” —lt was resolved that the entries for the handicap tournament for Mr Throp’s trophy should close on 27th May, at 11 p.m., and that the secretary bo instructed to post a notice slating the conditions of handicap, etc.—Proposed that MrC. Osmond be requested to act as auditor of accounts, and t hat the secretary be instructed to write Mr Reeves expressing their sympathy with him in his illuess.

With a view of familiarising the club members with the various openings, it was agreed that next Saturday should be devoted to a match between two teams chosen by the secretaries—Messrs R. M. Baird and J. Crow—an 1 that the opening bo the “ Ruy Lop< z ”
