THE SOUDAN EXPEDITION
The advance on Abu Hamed was kept an absolute secret, Sir Herbert Kitchener, sirdar of the Egyptian Army, being afraid of spies getting hold of his intentions. The Egyptian loss in the engagement was insignificant, but the dervishes suffered severely. The advance column, under Brigadier-general Hunter, consisted of 6,000 men.
