THE DISAFFECTION IN INDIA

AN ATTACKING PARTY ROUTED. A force of 6,000 Mahomedans attacked Shabkadar, a strongly fortified town, seventeen miles north-east of Peshawar. Tho attacking force had nearly outflanked Brigadier Wood, when Brigadier-general Elles, in command of the Peshawar detachment of Bengal Lancers, brilliantly charged the rebels and routed them. The British loss was twelve killed and fifty wounded, including three officers. Four hundred Mahomedans were killed and hundreds wounded.
