A sad tragedy has occurred at Summer Hill (N.8.W.). Mr James Gregg, aged seventy-two, who was in easy circumstances, a few weeks ago had a severe attack of influenza, which seriously affected his mind. On the morning of July 21 hia daughter, hearing cries of distress from her mother’s room, rushed in and found Mrs Gregg and her father lying on the bed with their throats cut. Gregg was evidently deranged, and bad to be placed under .restraint. It transpired that he had inflicted the wounds with a razor. Although they were slight, Mrs Gregg gradually sank and died. She was seventy-three years of age, and the saddest feature of the tragedy is that she and her husband were most fondly attached to one another.
Kaitangata Notes. —The mines are very busy just now, the orders at the Kaitangata mine being in excess of the output at the present time. The Castle Hill mine is being pushed ahead with all possible speed, and ere long we hope to see the company sending forth coal equal to the old mine, and in just as large quantities.—There are very few, if any, empty houses about the township, and many men who have come to reside here lately have had to leave their wives and families behind them until such time as they are able to get houses in which to locate them.—Amusements here of late have been few and far between, but we are shortly to have a drama staged, entitled ‘ Our Boys,’ by the local amateurs. The principal parts are to be sustained by Misses J. Corson, N. Corson, M. M‘Millan, and M'Kinnou, and Messrs Thomson, Davis, Algie, and Fitzgerald.— [Own Correspondent. ]
