AN EVENTFUL VOYAGE. After an eventful voyage the barque John Carswell arrived in Hobson Bay from Rio early on the morning of the 3rd inst., the passage having occupied since April 10. The vessel left in ballast, and had a fair run until May 17, when she fell in with strong gales from the N.W. to S.W., accompanied by high seas. These continued until well into the following month, and on June 4 her fore-topsail yard carried away. A spell of fine weather enabled the captain to repair damages and make good headway on his voyage, but he was then caught in another gale, and during the dirty weather which ensued the ballast became displaced, causing the ship to labor heavily, and take in a deal of water. Another spell of fine weather was experienced till July 10. Cape Otway was sighted next day, and an attempt was made to make the Heads, but the strong westerly winds drove the barque to the eastward, as owing to her light draught and the foul state of her bottom—caused from lying at Rio for eight months—she could not beat up against the gale. The captain sighted Cape Schanck on six separate occasions, but could not make for port, and while being buffeted about the stormy waters of the Strait had- to exercise all his seamanship to keep off the lee shore; indeed, it was thought by all on board that they would not weather Cape Liptrap, near which they were beating on July 20.So imminent was the danger considered that life belts were served round, and everv preparation made in case the worst should happen. However, she weathered the point, and nettt day signalled for provisions (winch were running short) off Wilson Promontory.■ Six days later the tug Albatross, which had been trying to make the weather-bound ship for some considerable time, reprovisioned her, and thence out the lot of those on board has been less hard, though their plight was a most unenviable one, and praise is due to captain, officers, and crew for the pluck displayed in the face of such adverse circumstances and frequently impending disaster.—' Age.’,
