BRIEF MENTION.
The Hon. G. F. Richardson is to be entertained at a dinner at Fortrose to-morrow, and will speak at Mataura on Monday. Messrs W. Brown and R. H. Leary have been appointed by the Council of the Accountants’ Institute to set the papers for the examination of candidates.
Lord Rayleigh, the well-known profdSaor of natural philosophy, has discovered a new gas atmosphere. The Kaffirs in Zontspansberg are again in revolt, and are attacking Agatha. Troops have been sent to repel them. The brother of the assassin Santo has committed suicide.
Mr J. Cook, Postmaster-General of New South Wales, was re-elected by a majority of 700. Mr A, J. Gould, Minister of Justice, was also returned by a large majority. It is reported that Herr Bameyer recently died of consumption in London.
In the House of Lords Baron Balfour moved the rejection of the Evicted Tenants Bill. Lord Tweedmouth, on behalf of the Government, declared that if the Lords rejected the measure they would me the day.
The overdraft of the Auckland Education Board is £943.
