I hear authoritatively that Mr S. Powell has agreed to start at the May meeting of the D.J.C., and the Hon. G. M'Lean will report to that effect at the next meeting of his committee. Mr Powell's starting gave such general satisfaction at Riccarton last week that the C.J.C. have determined to endeavor to secure his services permanently. The inconsistent form shown by Marvel at Rand wick labt week would have justified the stewards holding an inquiiy into his running. In the Doncastcr Handicap on the opening day of the meeting he won under the crushing weight of lOat 41b, cutting out the mile in the clinking time of lmhi 4123ec. Oa Thursday he could only got tnird place in the All-aged Stakes with over a stone off his back, and yet the time was lmin 1 But later in the day, though a reputed non-stayer, he won the Cumberland Stakeß, beating the best horaoa of the season at weight for age over two miles. Theßon of Marvellous—La Belle seems to have a happy knack of failing to get home when strongly supported by the public, and has proved a regular "milker" for puntcra, Weights for the principal events at our May meeting are not due till the 3rd prox., so that Mr Dowee will have Timaru, Wellington, and Ashburton form to guide him in framing his handicaps, The South Canterbury Club have satisfactory acceptances for their meeting on Thursday and Friday next. Little Arthur may iccouut for tho Hurdle Race, and Piitne Warden or Don Pedro should win the Autumn Handioip. Saracen will bo taken over to Melbourno next month to undergo his preparation for the V.R C. Djrby. Palliser has been sold by Mr Stead to the Messrs Hobbs, of limaru ; price not stated. Trotting meetings will be held at Carisbrook on the 21st prox., and at Tahuna Park a week later. The attendance at the Carisbrook meeting is euro to bo seriously affeetfd by two important football matches fixed for the same afternoon.
In one of the finals of the double-handed competitions which commenced on the Dunedin bowling green on the 16th inst., end concluded in Saturday last, Messrs J. F. Peake and J. Cameron scored 19 points against 13 by J. and A- Gillies. Orme, the English D-rby favorite, is reported to be ami)?, and the odds against him have extended to 3 to 1.
In the match between the Wellington and Phcciix Cricket Clubs, to deoide who should play off for tho championship with the Midland Club, the Phceoix captain called bis men from the wickets at five o'clock, and the umpires awarded the game to Wellington, no arrangement having been made to draw stumps at that hour. The acceptances for the principal events at the Tiraaru meeting are : Timaru Hordlks One mile and threc-quartera.— LHtla Aithur 10.2, Magpie 10.0, Captain Abram 9 10, Kflijy 9 7, Iroquois 9.2, Smuggler 9 0.
