FUNERAL OF THE LATE MR DALE
The funeral of the late Mr A, Dale, which took place in the old cemetery, Port Chalmers, yesterday afternoon, was the largest ever seen in the borough, friends coming from far and near to pay the last tribute of respect. The funeral copltge consisted of fully 700 persons. The local fire brigado, of which Mr Dale had been the first captain, formed a guard of honor under Lieutenant Oil thorpe, each of the men carrying either a floral wreath or cross ; also members of the Roslyn and South Dunedin brigades. The hearse was followed by the two sons and some of the immediate friends of the deceased, and then came a large detachment of railway employed under Mr Arthur, followed by about sixty members of the Masonic body, thelodges represented beipg tho Port Chalmers Marine, Otago, Dunedin, St. Patrick, Otago Kilwinning, Geltio, and Cargill Kilwinning. Amongst others present were the Mayors of Dunedin and Port Chalmers, Mr J. Mills (M.H.R. for the district), Mr Grant and members of the railway staff, Dr Drysdale, ■Messrs J. R. Monson, J. Mill, W. Goldie, and J. Morgan, J.P.*, Messrs C. Chilton, M.A., 0. P. Bossence and A, M'Clymont (reotor and masters of the District High School), Captain W. Thomson, Messrs Williams and Ness (and other members of the TJ.S.S. Company's staff), Captain Maofarlane (harbor-master), Captains M'Callum and Stevens (deputy harbor-masters), the pilots, and the full strength of the Alhambra and Port Chalmers Football and Crioket Clubs, the members of the Port Chalmers Borough Council, and many other*. The services at the grave were very Impressive, and at the request of the officiating minister —the Rsv. J. Riley—the hymn 'ln the sweet by-and-bye' was sung.
