ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES

The old man William Veitch, who was enticed out of his house and brutally assaulted and robbed on the night of March 23, at Wairio South (Auckland) died yesterday afternoon. On Monday last, as Veitoh appeared to be sinking, his depositions vera taken before two justices of the peace, at his house at Wairio South, and In the presence of Thomas Fry alias Floyd, who had been remanded on a oharge of assault and robbery. Veitoh then identified Fry as the man who assaulted him. When his depositions were taken Veitch, who was a feeble old man, was in a sad state, his face and cheßt having been severely bruised, and the flesh over the eyes swollen and lacerated. Fry was well-known in Wairio South district as a laborer by the name of "The Mexican," and worked for Veitch for some time.

A young man named Otto Campton, while engaged in excavating some ground at the new lunatic asylum at Porirua yesterday, was buried uhder a fall of earth. He was taken oat and brought to the hospital, where he died.

Inspector Hickson has been advised from Cromwell cf the accidental death at 8 a.m. on Saturday last of a man named William Campbell, at the Bendigo mine. The deceased, it appears, was carrying some dynamite down the shaft in a backet, and on a candle being lighted an explosion ensued, with fatal results. [By Telegraph.] William Beattie, found drowned at Oaniaru, is supposed to be the manager for Dalgety and Co.'s Lake Heron Station, Ashburton Gorge, who went to Oamaru a fortnight ago to visit a Bick friend, and has not since b Jen heard of. A private telegram received in Wellington Btates that S. Leonie and Viva Gillespie, aged fourteen and sixteen, daughters of H. C. Gilleepi'3, manager at the kauri timber factory, Thames, were drowned in the Kaueranga, River yesterday afternoon. The clothes of John Bourke, town clerk at Gisborre, were found at the end of the Gisborne areak water at eight o'olock this morning. Bourke went on to the breakwater to bathe at six o'clock, and has evidently been drowned. There is no Bign of the body ai present, but it is thought likely that it will be found among the rocks at low tide. Deceased was aged forty three, and had been town clerk at Gisborne for ten years, having previously been accountant at the Union Bank, Gisborne, Nelson, and Invercargill. Mrs Bourke states that her husband left home at 6.20 for a bathe, saying he would be back for breakfast. The sea was very calm, but a swift current was running, and aa the sides of the concrete blocks were very slippery he would have had a difficulty in getting back on to the pier. Deceased was esteemed by every citizen, and his sad fate has caused a shock to the community. _^_______^^
