The Evening Star WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1, 1891.

The railway to Middlemarch, on the Otago Central line, will be handed over to the Railway Commissioners on the 9th inst. At yesterday's meeting of the University Council it was decided, on the suggestion of the Registrar, to throw open the reference library to the general public two evenings in the week.

The Wellington Charitable Aid Board estimates for the year amount to L 7,257, of which 14,628 will be levied on the local bodies. The Hospital Board levies L 2.570 on local bodies.

Mr John Thomson, B E., has beea appointed lecturer on Applied Mechanics at the University of Otago. Mr Thomson was a prizeman of the Queen's College, and during his residence in the colony was in charge of the Gisborne and New Plymouth harbor works. With reference to the statement which has appeared in print that a commission is to inquire into the working of the Government Insurance Office, the Premier states that the Government are quite satisfied with the management of that institution, and has no intention of appointing a commission. The weekly meeting of the Benevolent Institution Trustees was held this afternoon; present—Messrs A. Solomon (chairman), H. Gourley, C. Haynes, R. Wilson, and W. Swan. Accounts amounting to L 93 7a 10d were passed for payment, and in addition to some formal business about thirty-five cases for relief were dealt with.

The third appearance of Professor Anderson was witnessed at the Princess's last evening by a numerous and appreciative audience. All the tricks are cleverly done, and the Professor succeeds in completely mystifying all those who closely watch his manipulations, Mdlle. Blanche lends material assistance.

There was the usual choral service at Holy Trinity, Port Chalmers, on the morning of Easter Day, including the celebration of Holy Communion, but the service was considerably elaborated. The 'Te Deum' waa sung to Dykea's service, and the anthem selected was • Christ our passover' (Gobs). An offertorium, ' Incline thine ear,' was also sung effectively. The preacher was the Rev. P. C. Platts, and the congregation waa large, The evening service, which was incorporated with a harvest festival, drew a congregation which quite filled the church. The hymns selected were both for Easter and a harvest service. The preaoher waa Bishop Nevill, whose sermon was powerful and impressive. The anthem was 'The ea*th is the Lord's' (Lowe), heartily sung, and tha solo in it very well rendered by Miss Amy De L. Graham. An offertorium was also effectively sung by Mr W. M'Kinnon. The decorations were very tasteful, reflecting credit on Mr D. Marr, whose conceptions they were. The altar waa embellished with a beautiful frontal, painted with a golden cross and white tliiies, a generous Easter offering from an anonymous donor.

The annual meeting of the Otago High School Old Eoya' Club will be held in St. Matthew's schoolroom on Frid&y evening. We have received a verbatim report of the proceedings at the New South Wales Federal Convention from the Govern i ent printer of that colony. The list of classes arranged by the Tecbnioal Olaises Association are now advertised. Pupils will be enrolled at the Normal School on Thursday and Friday evenings.

Mr W, gayce, of the Soolety of Friend?, will hold meetings to-night in Hanover street Baptist Schoolroom, and to-moirow evening in Wesleyan Hall, Moray place. The opening meeting of the North Dunedin Literary Association waß held in the church last evening, when there was a large attendance The president (Rev, J. Gibson Smith) delivered an address on ' Speaking in Public,' and several musical selections were given by the members. Beveral of the direotors of the Otago Industrial Cooperative Association met the residents of Rcslyn and Kaikoral last night, when a strong local committee was formed. A number of shares were applied for, and between fifty and sixty new applications were handed in by one of the provisional directors. The Salvation Army announce special meetings for Sunday next and two following days, on the occasion of the first visit of their new commander, Colonel Bailey, who comes from South Africa to the New Zealand work. Services will be held an Sunday in the Garrison Hall in the morning and afternoon and at night, and on Monday meetings will take place all day in the Princes street barracks, when the subject of ' Practical Religion' is to be dealt with. Man was made to mourn, but he has fixed things so that his wife has taken the job off his hands. A new kind of shoe button has been named "Old Majd's Wedding," because it never comes off.
