(Received February 18, 1888, at 12.20 p.m.) The Halles Centrales, in the Rue de Lamberteau and Rue de Berger, were almost totally destroyed by fire to-day. Over 100,000 head of poultry were destroyed, COLLAPSE OP AN EXHIBITION BUILDING. LONDON, February 17. The building which was erected for the Newcastle Exhibition, and which was closed on the 29th October last, collapsed suddenly yesterday, but no one was injured. A BYE-ELECTION. LONDON, February 17. Mr Firth (Gladstonite) has been returned for the Dundee seat, vacant by the resignation of MrO. C. Lacaita, securing a majority of .8,000 over his opponent—General Sir H. D. Daly (Unionist). [The result does not affect the representation. Dundee has always gone ultra-Liberal. Mr C. O. Lacaita, the retiring member, headed the poll at the general election of 1885, but at the last general election ho was twenty votes behind his colleague, Mr E. Robertson.
