RIFLE SHOOTING.

The Artillery held the first competition for their new Challenge Cup at the Anderson’s Bay Range, on Saturday last. The Cup has not yet arrived from London, but is expected shortly, and we have no doubt will prove a handsome specimen of the goldsmith’s art, creditable alike to the makers and our townsman, Mr J. A. Ewen, who is looking after the interest of the battery in the matter. The Cup has to be won four times, on the following conditions, before it becomes the property of any one member of the battery—viz., seven shots at ranges of 200, 500, and 600 yards ; Hythe position ; Wimbledon targets; Government rifles and ammunition, and no sighting shots ; besides the Cup money prizes, to the value of L 5, were given as an inducement to the younger members of the battery. jTwo squads competed, one at six a.m., and the other at three p.m. ; the former having slightly the advantage in point of weather Corporal Ogil vie heads thelistwiih the very fair score of 65 ; Captain M’Farland following with 61. The shooting, on the whole, was indifferent; but this is, no doubt, q.ving to the earline: sof the season. The following are the scores of the winners : 200 500 COO
