AUSTRALIA AND WAR CRIMINALS

CANBERRA, Sept. 13

Australia is taking swift and independent action against Japanese war criminals. Australian commanders of concentrations of Japanese troops have been instructed to detain all whose names appear on lists of war criminals or who,are suspected of war crimes.

The Acting Minister of External Affairs (Mr. Makin) announced this direct action when he tabled the Webb report. Mr. Makin revealed that General Mac Arthur. Admiral Mountbatten, and the Chinese military authorities had been requested to obtain all available evidence of Japanese crimes against Australians and to seize suspected criminals. Mr. Makin said that the Australian Government v/as determined that the Japanese war criminals should be tried forthwith.
