MODIFIED ZONING
Sir, —With unnecessary restrictions being removed the time is opportune for checking up on zoning regulations governing the delivery of goods. Zoning is economically sound, but the present system requires revision so that householders may make a reasonable selection of the goods they require. I do not think anyone can justify the return of the wasteful competitive system in the delivery of goods, which permitted, for instance, half a dozen bread delivery vans to traverse the same street daily. On the other hand, householders should not be compelled to consume a particular brand of bread because a particular baker has a monopoly of the area. To maintain economy and give the consumer a reasonable choice of goods such as bread it would be a comparatively simple matter for bakers to combine and form a subsidiary delivery company. This company would have a fleet of vans, the bodies of which would be subdivided into, say, six compartments, one of which would be allotted to each of six bakers. This system would give consumers a reasonable opportunity of | making a selection. The system could be applied with equal success to other classes of goods. Let us have economy by all means, but let it be a reasoned, not a blindly regimented, one.—l am, etc.. H.M.G.
