A NATIONAL APPEAL
A committee of Auckland business men is sponsoring an appeal for £100,000 with which to endow a chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the proposed new hospital fpr women to be established at Auckland. The committee has set itself the task of collecting £60,000, of which £40,000 had been obtained up to the end of last month, and it is asking the rest of New Zealand to find the balance of £40,000. The need for greater facilities for post-graduate courses in obstetrics and gynaecology is evident; moreover, it is a national need, and the finding of the necessary funds must be regarded as a Dominion responsibility. When a Chair of Obstetrics was founded at the Dunedin Medical School the women of New Zealand raised the funds with which it is endowed, an I thus paved the way for great advances in theoretical training. What is needed now is greater opportunity for practical training, and this the women's hospital in Auckland and the establishment of a Chair of Obstetrics and Gynaecology will provide. By sponsoring an appeal for funds with which to endow the chair, and by accepting the greater share of the responsibility, the Auckland committee has set an excellent example to the rest of the Dominion, and there should be no doubt about the generosity of the response.
