SYDNEY, September 7. C. J. S. Purdy consolidated his lead in the Australian chess championship by defeating M. E. Goldstein in 22 moves. _ The New Zealand champion, R. G. Wade, showed good understanding of position in his game against the South Australian expert, A. L. Miller. He got slightly the worse of the opening, but turned the tables and won very convincingly. The New South Wales champion, Lajos Steiner, was defeated by the veteran C. G. Watson, but in an adjourned game Steiner defeated the title-holder, G. Koshnitsky. Progress scores are:—Purdy, 4 wins; Wade and- Watson, each 3£; Steiner, 3; S. Lazare, 2g. ____
