SERIOUS DAMAGE
FIRE IN KAISER YARDS
■ LONDON, August 31. Hundreds of workmen leaped or swam to safety when welding sparks set fire to the Kaiser shipbuilding yards at Portland, Oregon. The blaze destroyed the outfitting dock and adjoining buildings, and seriously damaged several of seven completed ships valued at 25,000,000 dollars which were in the basin. The vessels, some of which were still smoking, were towed to safety.
