GROUP REORGANISATION
BRITISH LABOUR PARTY
Rec. 11.20 a.m. LONDON, August 31. The Labour Party is to reorganise itself to improve the co-operation between the Government and its supporters. The party stated that the Labour M.P.s will elect a liaison committee between the Government and the party and form groups to consider various aspects of policy. They will also elect a non-Ministerial chairman and a vice-chairman, and these, with the secretary and Mr, Carol Johnson as the party's officers, a Labour Peer, the Leader of the House of Commons, Mr. Morrison, and the Chief Whip, Mr. Whiteley, will constitute the liaison committee. The groups and their chairmen will be appointed by the liaison committee. The Labour Peers will be invited to appoint one of their number to serve on each group. The groups are being formed because of the size of the party, 393 members, would crowd the largest committee room and make adequate discussion difficult. The party,, however, will continue its regular meetings for general business. Final decisions will rest with the full party.
