MEDICAL SUPPLIES AT

SINGAPORE

MELBOURNE, August 31. Of 5500 Australians in Singapore, 1200 are hospital cases, according to a broadcast from Singapore which was picked up by the Prisoner of War Relatives' Association listening post. A Japanese announcer said that the message was from Lieutenant-Colonel F. G. Galleghan, senior officer of the Australian prisoners of war in Malaya. The broadcast said that about 80 per cent, of the men in Singapore were suffering from chronic malaria and were in indifferent health. The men in Java and Sumatra, according to the latest messages received in Singapore, were in worse condition. Supplies of atebrin and quinine were urgently needed.
