"PURE PROPAGANDA"
JAPANESE MAKE MOST OF ATOMIC BOMB
WASHINGTON, August 30. Major-Gen eral Groves, commander of the atomic bomb project at Oakridge, Tennessee, told the Press thati the Japanese reports of deaths from! radio-active effects of atomic bombing were pure propaganda. Studies by scientists did not bear out the reports of deaths, he said. Nothing could be more useful to the Japanese as propaganda. The people of the United States would be committing suicide if the work on atomic energy was discontinued. General Groves said he believed that commercial uses for this force were decades away. Work on bomb production was continuing, he said. The War Department's decision regarding operations was awaiting Congressional action on the legislation which would soon be introduced by President Truman. "We want to have enough bombs for anything," he said. "Hiroshima and Nagasaki should show that the nation that has atomic bombs completely controls the situation." In a speech in Johannesburg today, Field-Marshal Smuts described the atomic bomb as probably the greatest contribution ever made to the future peace of the world. He said: "It has burnt fear of war into the souls of men. I take off my hat to the atomic bomb."
