SURRENDER IN CHINA

Rec. 11.50 a.m. CHUNGKING, Aug. 31. Tokio radio announced .that the Japanese in China will formally surrender at Nanking next Thursday, September 6. A correspondent of the Associated Press at Kunming says that informants who have just returned from Annam report that the Annam Nationalists, j collaborating with the Communists, have been allowed by the Japanese to seize control of Hanoi after a wave of demonstrations and -uprisings which! spread throughout Indo-China. Signs! of welcoming the United^Nations Com- j mission have appeared in the streets. British, American, and Russian flags wave from many windows. People of i Annam can be seen drilling with arms. The High Command at Chungking announced that Chinese troops have occupied Laokay, across the Indo-China border, and are advancing towards Hanoi. They have also occupied Hankow. The influential newspaper "Takungpao" urged the British to return Hong Kong and Kowloon to the Chinese. General Wedemeyer announced that incomplete reports from a humanitarian team on Hainan Island showed that the majority of the 400 prisoners are in a critical condition. Their nationality has not been determined, but they are not believed to be Americans. Food, medical ■ supplies, and clothing are being dropped on Hainan Island today. Eighteen internees, including four Americans, have been evacuated from Peking, also 12 captives of undisclosed nationality from Weihsien, where the morale is good and supplies are plentiful.
