ON SLOPPY TRACKS

GALLOPS AT AWAPUNI

(Special to "The Post.")

PALMERSTON N., This Day. After rain on Monday the tracks were sloppy at Awapuni on Tuesday morning, and the course proper was open only to horses engaged at the New Plymouth and Wanganui Meetings. The going was greasy "and the times were slow.

One of the best efforts over a mile was that of Solver (A. Q. Waddell), who maintained a steady pace to complete in just over 2.0, the last five furlongs in 1.132-5. Lord Bradbury (W. J. Broughton) and Sir Bradbury (Broughton) worked separately over seven furlongs, but neither was against the watch. Sir Bradbury came home the last three furlongs in just over 45sec. Yasda and Tahli worked kindly once round, and Alethea (V. J. Sellars) was given a working gallop, covering the last three furlongs in 47sec. After Czarina (light boy) had given Theolateral (Broughton) a lead to the 'straight, the grey moved up to be on terms after running six furlongs in 1.27 2-5, the last three in 44sec. Omahina (A. G. Waddell) hopped away short of the five-furlong post, and she maintained a steady pace throughout, running the five furlongs in 1.15.

Reversion (G. Walker) went once round, coming home from the three in 43 2-ssec.

Lady Spiral (M. Andrews) worked evenly over five furlongs in 1.15 2-5. She is coming to hand quickly? Controller (Andrews), under a good hold, started from short of the sixfurlong peg, being speeded up to run the last half-mile in 60sec. Specialist (A. Waddell) and Newel -Post (J. P. Bowness) were clear of Lucky Dip (Sellars) at the end of a useful five furlongs in better than 1.11 3-5. Peter Quex (A. Waddell) broke 60sec for half a mile, running the last three furlongs in 42sec. Gay Rouen and Purple Dawn covered five furlongs in 1.15. Tremello (G. R. Tattersall) took 1.16 in a similar task. THE JUMPERS. Two horses jumped the country. They were First Edition (M.Andrews), who started at the logs and, except for a refusal at the first brush, gave a sound if careful display, and Northfield (W. Murray), who went twice round, giving a fine exhibition of clever jumping. Northfield misjudged the run into the sod wall the second time, but he recovered well and skidded over it, landing as if nothing had happened. The caretaker, Mr. R. MacDonell, has prepared a new hurdle track which is proving popular with the trainers. The old track has been graded and it will not be many weeks before Awapuni will have a first-class trial grass, which will prove particularly useful to trainers educating two-year-olds. __ Caelus (J. Fagan) and Kiwi Pai (A. Midwood) took on six hurdles on the new track yesterday and gave a splendid exhibition of fast jumping. Kiwi Pai jumped faster than Caelus, but they were together approaching each fence Speed King (W. J. Stevens), School Tie (N. Rouse), and Ideation (W. Jenkins) were associated in a similar trial. Ideation, through taking off too soon, came to grief at the fourth fence. Riding engagements for the New Plymouth Meeting are:—W. J. Broughton, Derryogue, Tifox, Golden Kea; A. G. Waddell," Omahina, Specialist; W. Murray, Northfield; A. Midwood, Edward; M. Andrews, Lightfair, First Footing, Newel Post; W. Jenkins, Foxbrae; J. Fagan, Aga Kay; W. J. Stevens, Peter's Choice, Ngamotu; C. A. Bowry, Ideation.
