TURF NOTES

(BY "BINOCULAR."*

WOODVILLE MEETING

THE G.N. DERBY

PENSACOLA TO COMPETE

Even though he had little to spare at the finish of the New Zealand Derby, Pensacola Avon the Canterbury Cup against the older horses! very attractively, and he then gave! evidence that he had benefited by the! outing he had in the classic. Further, he showed ability to handle heavy ground just as his dam, Amyril, did during her racing career, for this mare, even though she did not go very far in the game, won the Woburn Hack Handicap and Petone Hack Handicap, two'six-furlong races, at Trentham in the winter of 1933! when the ground was bad., However there were several high-class gallopers in the family. Bathos and Grotesque, two older half-brothers by Absurd to Amyril, were good winners on both sides of the Tasman. Perception, a brother to Amyril, did not prove as good a winner as Bathos and Grotesque, but won the Glenlee Handicap, 1 mile, at Warwick Farm on the same afternoon as Limerick won the Warwick Stakes. Pensacola was bred at the Grange Stud, and was bought at the 1943 National Sales by J. Shaw, of Riccarton, as agent, for 250gs, and his successes at the past C.J.C. Meeting magnify the loss the Dominion suffered when his sire, Golden Eagle, a son of Fairway, died shortly after he had taken up stud duty in this country. It is the intention of Pensacola's owner to send the gelding north to Ellerslie for the Great. Northern Derby. , Unfortunate.—The- defection of both Kindergarten and Golden Souvenir robbed the Canterbury Cup of much of its attractiveness, for it had been expected that the former" would make history by being the first horse to win the event on three occasions and in successive years. However, the chami pion has been experiencing trouble in the suspensory ligament, and his "new trainer, L. J. Ellis, may find it difficult to keep him going. Golden Souvenir was tender after his Derby effort. [ Firm Favourite.—The Auckland filly My Bonnie carried more than twice as much money as Bonny Flight in the Oaks Stakes, but her army of backers had a very indifferent run for their money. She was always well back arid, overlooking a check she suffered near the five-furlong post, she never looked likely to make up her ground. The change in conditions seemingly spoiled her chance. Sensational.—One of the greatest performances registered in recent months by a hack was witnessed at Riccarton on Saturday when Signal Officer won the Seymour Handicap. Last away, he was standing up the leaders 20 to 30 lengths going along the back, and was still there with five furlongs to go. He was then forced to come round his field at the straight entrance, but maintained his sensational run to beat his opponents in hollow fashion. He is a three-year-old by Salmagundi from Morse Signal, a mare by ViceAdmiral from Miss Signal. Morse Signal won races, but did not go far, and her son should reach much greater heights. A Real Benefit.—The Rangitikei Meeting at Bulls proved a benefit! gathering for Awapuni-trained horses. Inclusive of the two division events, eight of the winners, five seconds, and four thirds were horses trained at that centre. In three of the events all three stake-winners hailed from there. Fresh Horse.—The Paper Money mare Listen In was a newcomer to last Saturday's fields at Riccarton. At her previous start she had won the Novice Handicap, six furlongs, at Gore, strolling home by four lengths, Signal Officer being one of the beaten lot when at long odds. Listen In made a bold bid to carry her account further in the Seymour Handicap, but Signal Officer was a different horse and she had to bow to defeat. The betting market certainly suggested that the improvement on the part of Signal Officer was fully expected. Useful Sort.—On the opening day of the Wanganui Meeting in September, Sovereign Lad won the Putiki Hack Handicap very impressively, but, lifted to 9.9 for the Moutoa Handicap, also of 9 furlongs, he failed in the heavier ground. He was then transferred to the open ranks in the Foxton Cup, running a satisfactory race without looking dangerous. Like the majority of the stock of Inflation, he does best on a light preparation, and at his next start, in the Rangitikei Cup on Saturday, he won in, good style. The price he paid was really a false one. Good Price.—When he won his division of the maiden event at Bulls, iMine Host paid a surprisingly good dividend, for his form at Otaki at his preceding start had suggested that he would be an early winner. A big type of a three-year-old, he is by Man's Pal from the Woodend —Spearmaid mare Substitute, an elder half-sister to Spanish Lad and Nigger Boy. Great Speed.—Lord Roland is still striving to win his way out of the maiden class. On the opening day at Riccarton he got badly away in the non-totalisator event, but showed brilliant speed to run up to the leaders before the straight was reached. It was not surprising that the effort told in the run home. On the second day he swung round when the tapes went up and took no part in the race. A three-year-old by Defaulter from Privet, a mare by Rizzio from the Rossendale mare Tiger Rose, he should win races when he settles down. First Success.—Don Mac, winner of the second division of the Trial Plate at Bulls, is a three-year-old by Siegfried from the Night Raid mare Night Myth, thus a half-brother to Night Legend (winner in Australia) and to Night Scout Purchased at the 1943 Sales by Mr. R. Porter, of Palmerston North, Don Mac gave this newcomer to the ranks of owners his first success. An Improver.—At the recent Levin Meeting at Otaki, Mary Jo showed a good turn of speed to be one of the leaders into the straight in the hack sprint. That effort suggested that she was a likely improver in a maiden event around Christmas time. However, she' opened her winning account quicker than expected when she took the Farewell Hack Handicap, 7 furlongs, at Bulls to pay a substantial dividend. She is a five-year-old by Laughing Prince from the Acre— Kinsem mare Acco. Both Acco and Kinsem won races for Mr. K. McK. Duncan, who bred Mary Jo, but Saturday's winner does not race in his interest. Salmagundi Filly.—There were two Salmagundi fillies in the N.Z. Oaks at Riccarton, Miss Medley and Bonny Flight, and they finished first and third respectively. The decision to run Boniiy Flight in the classic was made when the softer track offered. Halfway home she threatened to be dan gerous, but on her rider, A. E. Didham, finding that he could not overtake Miss Medley, he eased the daughter of Francolin.
