SINKING OF U-BOAT
NEW ZEALANDER'S PART,
I A „ LONDON, July 5. A New Zealander, Sub-Lieutenant W. G. Bowles, R.N.Z.N.V.R., who was piloting a fighter plane from the British aircraft-carrier Archer, had a hand in the sinking of a U-boat which was officially credited solely to planes from converted merchantmen aircraft-car-riers. The action took place recently in the Atlantic. The U-boat was the fourth sighted by planes from the Archer, and was travelling on the surface at full speed towards a convoy. The plane attacked and the U-boat attempted to dive, but again came to the surface with 30ft of its stern sticking out of the water. The U-boat's crew manned the guns, but Lieutenant Bowles came up to support the first attacker. He dived on the U-boat with guns blazing and silenced the U-boat's guns, after which the crew of the U-boat jumped into the water. The U-boat sank three minutes later.
