STARTED A LOTTERY

A raffle :to assist a working men's organisation at Karori resulted in Mrs. Elizabeth McGowan, of Shirley Street, being charged at 'the. Magistrate's Court yesterday • with starting a lottery. The prize was a Christmas hamper, and the police said the defendant did not realise that. ?ho required' authority from' the Minister of Internal Affairs.. She ordered 500 books of tickets from ' Universal Printing Products, Ltd., and when she found that the raffle was.illegal* she promptly withdraw the tickets and refunded the money. The. offence, it was stated, had been committed' in ignorance. The defendant was fined £2 and costs by Mr. J. L. , Stout, S.M. The printing company was'fined the minimum amount of £5 for failing to put its name on the tickets. Mr. E. S. Parry, who appeared for both defendants, said the offences were quite unconnected. The company did not know that the tickets were to be used illegally, and the omission to put the name on was an oversight due to pressure of work and shortage of experienced staff.
