WAR BOOM IN EGYPT
LONDON, February 14
'"Egypt, in its 4000 years of history, has probably never been so prosperous," says the "Daily Mail's" Cairo correspondent. "With the Axis arms 2000 miles away, Egypt is settling down to the pleasant role of the world's No. 1 boom country.
"It is difficult to believe that there is a country left anywhere capable of balancing its budget from regular revenue. Egypt has just done it, with £10,000,000 to spare. "Egypt, for one thing, with British armies on both sides of its frontiers, has no need to join in the world's armament competition. Allied troops are bringing in practically £3,000,000 a month, and the fruit and vegetable growers are asking their own price.
"Nouveau riche merchants with newly-acquired money to spend have forced up living costs astronomically."
