SOCIAL INSURANCE
CANADIAN SCHEME
(Rec. 1 p.m.) RUGBY, Jan. 29. To make freedom from fear and want "the assured possession of all," the Government of Canada proposes . a comprehensive scheme of social insurance, it was announced in the Speech from the Throne at the opening of the new session of Parliament at Ottawa. The Speech, said it was proposed to work out post-war security plans at once, and that they will "constitute a charter of security for the whole, of Canada." An Ottawa message says that a Select Committee is to be appointed by the Government and. that the Speech laid emphasis on the necessity for guarding against major economic and social hazards which may arise at the end of hostilities. The objective will be •to ensure adequate incomes for primary producers and full employment after the war. A national system of health insurance is also proposed.—B.O.W.
FRENCH LABOUR FOR GERMANY
(Rec. Soon.) RUGBY, Jan. 29. The Vichy Government is at present occupied with the organisation of a second recruitment of labour for Germany, , according to the Swiss newspaper "Neve Zeitung." It is said that during his second visit to Berlin Laval consented to place 60 per cent, of the' French specialised workers at the disposal of German industry, involving the dispatch of 250,000 French workers to Germany.—B.O.W,
