A RARE OPPORTUNITY

WOMEN RACEGOERS WEAR

SUMMER CLOTHES

Saturday's clear sunshine fully atoned for the. dismal conditions on the first day of the Wellington Summer Meeting at Trentham.and.women racegoers were given an open choice of summer attire, a rare opportunity of which they made the : most, - almost every colour and vogue meeting the eye. ' .. ■'■■ .■< '■■■■■■■'■ ■ ■■"■ ■ '■■ '■■ White was a popular choice, wearers of white suite or " full-length, shortsleeved coats looked cool and trim, colour contrasts being introduced in revers, hat. quills,, and, ribbons, and accessories. Many New Zealand Army nurses were present wearing their allwhite hats and, uniforms, with scarlet shoulder tabs. • • .:• . - - Silk and linen frocks ;in. all the soft pastel shades: and v worn; with. : widebrimmed hats to match," were popular with ,the majority-of younger, patrons, many of the frocks .following the neatly collared ■ shirt-waist 'style. Tan and brown, with white accessories, made some of the most striking ensembles .worn.!. .; , ~ ■■/",-. Millineryl was, of necessity, as varied as the frockirig, hats ranging from the widest picture type to tiny toques trimmed with self-flowers and veiled. The more eccentric shapes i were conspicuous .by their absence, | as was the usually populai" Trentham choice of black arid white. ! The course was looking its best, the green of well-kept lawns . and ', lovely old trees making a'perfect foil for the vivid flower beds. The sight of people enjoying picnic luncheons in the sun' beside their: cars or under the trees, on the course was reminiscent of. happier peace-time days, but the pre-l sence of so many men and women in the uniforms of the services brought I back the realities of the present.
