KEY TO BIG RAILWAY
! LONDON, January 7. Dr. Wellington Koo, the Chinese Ambassador in London, today spoke of the Chinese victory at Changsha. He pointed out that the city was situated on the Canton-Hankow railway, and that the main object of the Japanese attack was to gain control of the railway so that they could send reinforcements to Malaya from the port of Canton. However, the Chinese forces, for the fourth time in three years, had defeated the enemy before the very gates of this key city.
Tokio has now admitted "a strategic withdrawal" of Japanese troops from Changsha. A few days ago the Japanese claimed the capture of the town.
Chungking radio says that Changsha has now been entirely cleared of the enemy and that the townspeople are returning to their homes.
