ENOUGH OF THE WAR

FINNS FACED WITH FAMINE

LONDON, September 25

<An Englishman, Mr. Paul Seyler, who fought with the Finns against the Russians last year, declared on his arrival in London from Sweden that Finland faces famine in the coming winter.

Rich Finns during the past year have been taking vitamin tablets costing 15s a hundred. Fruit, greens, and vegetables, except potatoes, are not available. The rich bought in the black markets, where half a pound of pork cost £5. and a pound of sugar 30s. Manual labourers saw meat once every two months. Cigarettes were unprocurable, except for soldiers, who received three a day. The people of Helsinki had recently been eating seagulls.

The Finns had had enough of warfare, he said, and were openly showing hostility to the Germans whenever possible.
