PORT AN ASSET TO CITY
Emphasising ■'the value of the floating dock as an asset to the city at one of his open-air meetings, Mr.. R. McKeeni, one of the Labour candidates for the Harbour Board; as well as the Labour Mayoral candidate, said that it had been responsible for bringing a, substantial amount of work to the city in the way of repairs, as, with its lifting capacity of 17,000 tons, it could accommodate fairly largeships. Its cost of £196,000 had been fully justified. It was not a profit-earning undertak,ing, as the- shipping-companies had -subscribed: to its cost. Twenty per cent, of the country's exports and 35 -per cent of its imports passed through .the; port. Development had been planned .ahead,' administration had been carefully handled, and its total indebtedness, with sinking funds in \hand,'was only £300,000. ■
